Holiday Inn - Newark

The Holiday Inn North
Newark International Airport

Rothschild's Lounge

The Holiday Inn North at Newark International Airport was taken over by NHC in 1980 from a consortium of Savings banks in the New Jersey Marketplace. This hotel property was being run by a group of 10 Savings banks and offered for sale as a sealed bid to five select groups. NHC brought in the Olnick Family Partnership of NYC to bid on the property. They were the successful bidder. The hotel was a financially distressed property that was in need of prudent financial management and aggressive marketing concepts. NHC recognized immediately that the traveler coming to Newark saw a hotel with a much lower rate than the competition. The rate was raised to within $3.00 of the other Holiday Inn at Newark Airport and occupancy began to rise. At that time Holiday Inn had a Book that listed all of its properties nationwide and the rates. Each quarter the rates would change.

Hunt Room Restaurant

The second step was to hire a new marketing and sales team that approached the corporate community with new ideas to accommodate their corporate guests to the area. Meeting rooms were improved with new technology and offered to the local corporation’s free for every 10 guest rooms they booked. The new ownership approved a total renovation to the Restaurant and Cocktail lounge. This added to the attractiveness of the property and helped to bring in the business. The property was operated profitably for over 12 years and then sold at a substantial profit. Of course it helped that the Airport grew substantially over that 12 year period of time however with the growth came many new hotels.
